Development

Ben Gibbard did not originally like his song "The Sound of Settling" and was reluctant to include it on the album Transatlanticism due to his self-described "phobia" of uptempo songs - the song is notable for its upbeat 'bopba' chorus. However, producer and guitarist Chris Walla insisted that it be included on the album.[1]

Music video

The video begins with a picture frame containing a picture of green velvet curtains. The camera zooms out, and the picture frame is in a picture in a picture frame; the cycle then repeats itself, adding in the members of the band and others dressed up as elderly people, pastry chefs, gingerbread men, surgeons, themselves, and more. It also includes other people, like breakdancers and gospel singers. The video bears resemblance to music video for The New Pornographers' song Letter from an Occupant.
